Light Therapy

Historically, from the ancient Greeks to scientists and pioneers of  modern medicine the process of questioning, observing and trying to interpret the phenomenon of light, its importance in our lives and its therapeutic values as a preventitive and/or in the treatment of a variety of physical and emotional disorders is well documented. From the intital biblical statement "let there be light" to the idea of being "enlightened " light has played a consistant role in the developement of all living things .  Indeed Light Therapy Pioneer Dr. John Ott States: " Light is a nutrient much like food, and, like food ; the wrong kind can make us ill, and the right kind can keep us well." eg. too little light and we can become pale, flabby, apathetic and lack vitality. Similarly too much artifical light has been reported to have a negative effect on our sleep and mood patterns.

So what is light therapy?

Light is defined as the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum and as a therapy of our modern day is referred to as light therapy or phototherapy, whilst in ancient times it was more classicaly known as heliotherapy.  The light treatment  is administered for a prescribed amount of time and, in some cases, at a specific time of day through exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of light  using technology such as cold lasers, light-emitting diodes, fluorescent lamps,  or very bright, full-spectrum light.

Who can benefit from light therapy?

Scientific research has shown that certain wavelengths of light encourage specific healing functions. Indeed visible red, blue and 'invisible' infrared light have proven to be extemely effective towards improved health and wellbeing.

RED light, which is visible, at a wavelength of 640 nanometers (nm), penetrates tissue to a depth of about 8-10 mm. It is very beneficial in treating issues close to the surface such as wrinkles, wounds, cuts, scars  and is particularly effective in treating infections. it  also also has an anti-inflammatory

effect and can kill bacteria, as can blue light.

INFRARED light , next to red on the spectrum and invisible to the human

eye, at a wave length of 880 nanometers, penetrates to a depth of approximately

30-50 nm, which makes it more effective for treating medium to deep tissue

such as bones, inflammation, pain, joints, tendons, teeth. â€‹

BLUE light which is visible, at a wave length of 430 nm, penetrates tissue to a

depth of approximately 3-4 mm. Besides its use as an antibacterial and

anti-inflammatory agent, and being beneficial in aiding nervous disorders, it has also been found effective in treating conditions such as skin complaints,  rheumatism, insomnia, SAD, facial Rejuvenation and acting as a natural anti-aging non -surgical alternative.

Why should you be interested in Light Therapy?

Safe, non-abrasive, non-invasive, and restorative!

How often do I need treatment?

It varies for every individual depending on their particular concerns, but as a general guide, for chronic and acute issues, you can expect anywhere from 4 to 12 treatments.  These will be administered to suit your circumstances but as with any healing modality, to get the greatest benefit, frequent and daily exposure to the light treatment is encouraged. For that reason, it is highly recommended that you begin your treatment plan by attending at least 1 session per day for 4-6 consecutive days with follow-up/maintenance sessions taylored to your individual needs.

Please note: Light therapy is contraindicated for the womb of a pregnant woman, localized skin cancer sites, epilepsy or history of seizures, and those on light sensitive medications

LED THERAPY

A form of light therapy that can be used to apply concentrated doses of LED* light to support the natural healing process, restoring and improving health and vitality. Delivered via soft and comfortable pads which are placed on different areas of the body, including over the eyes, to stimulate healing for any specific concern. You lie comfortably for up to 20minutes and enjoy soft music, deep relaxation and gentle warmth. It is non-avasive with no removal of clothing required.

Uses for LED therapy include:

  • Acne

  • Psoriasis

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Depression and other mental health issues

  • Muscle and joint pain and stiffness associated with arthritis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Stress reduction

  • Promoting cell regeneration

  • Speeding up the healing process

  • Stimulating the release of ATP (1) and Nitric Oxide(2)

  • and more ....

QWL Therapy

The Scalar/Quantum Wave Laser (QWL) is a form of light therapy using a  blend of  Cold Laser**/Low Level Laser, LED's and Frequency Medicine.  This unique technology is loaded with pre-programmed frequencies that rejuvenate the mind/body at a cellular level by donating photonic energy via the small hand held instrument and/or its three probe attachements.

After a brief history is taken you will be asked to lie comfortably on a massage table for approximately 30-50 minutes (dependant on individuals treatment plan). The laser is placed on various parts of your body, preferably next to the skin. QWL Therapy gently and effectively unwinds stress and tension while dissolving old holding patterns at the cellular level which erases cellular memory to support healing. It is completely painless and non-invasive with no undressing required.

Reported conditions that have been effectively helped include:

  • Pain relief

  • Healing injuries

  • Weight loss

  • Immune enhancement

  • Headaches & Migraine's

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME)

  • Addiction rehabilitation

  • Stress & tension relief

  • And much more......

I was referred to Caroline as I am bi polar and my prescribed medication wasn't helping the worst part of my illness, the depressions. I had a bunch of sessions with the light pads and found they really helped lift my mood. I purchased the light mask when it came out and use it regularly if I'm too high or low. I'd say it's improved my condition by 80 per cent which I think is brilliant. Thanks Caroline! Douglas Hastings

* LED (light emitting diode) light is nowhere as dense or concentrated as laser but still has the impact to penetrate into the tissues without heating or inflaming them. Increasingly they are becoming more favourable over the cold laser as they give a larger light dispersion beam and allow a greater margin of error in locating and activating a specific area. They are totally safe.

**LASER stand for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Radiation in this context is merely an expression of enegy transmission. Lasers are known are either hot or cold in their classification i.e hot cuts, cauterises and destroys, whilst cold lasers, also referred to as low level, therapeutic or soft lasers work at a lower power and stimulate cell function in a non-thermal and non-destructive manner. They are totally safe and work by gently donating energy in the form of photons, which then increases the energy of the cell, called ATP (adenosine Triphopsphate), which in turn stimulates the cell to grow more efficiently.

(1) Evidence indicates that cells absorb photons and transform their energy into ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), which is a form of energy that cells utilize. The resulting ATP is then used to power metabolic processes and to synthesize DNA & RNA (proteins & enzymes.) ATP may also repair or regenerate cell components, foster an abundance of cell reproduction and increase circulation thus restoring balance to the body

(2) A chemical in the blood called nitric oxide is essential to the ability of blood vessels to relax.  Not to be confused with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or nitric acid (an explosive), nitric oxide is a critical relaxing factor that is made by the endothelial cells lining our blood vessels as well as the red blood cells. A big factor in high blood pressure and heart attack risk is a deficiency of nitric oxide in your artery walls. This highly versatile and important biochemical regulates the muscle tone of arteries. NO also prevents Atherosclerosis and injury to the vessel wall. At the same time, it functions elsewhere in our bodies as a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, brain-cell protector, neuro-transmitter (chemical messenger in the brain), and memory and learning enhancer, relaxes the bladder wall and dilates the airways.
